Advanced multifunctional materials are central to a range of important technologies. They often involve an interplay between deformation, electromagnetic fields, thermal loads and other multiphysics. There is currently a need for fundamental characterization and understanding, as well a need for the integration of physics-based modeling, design and control at the device or structural level to enable design.

This symposium will explore the central role of Mechanics of Materials and Structures in interfacing with the materials community on the one hand and the design and control community on the other.

Topics include, but are not limited to, theory, computation and experiments on various aspects of these materials.

  1. Crystallography, structure, and energetics from atomistic, quantum, and mesoscale models
  2. Quasistatic, dynamic, frequency-dependent response, and wave-propagation response and characterization with temperature, electromagnetic fields, and other applied fields
  3. Effects of microstructure, polycrystalline texture, and interactions with plasticity, fracture, fatigue, and other phenomena
  4. Advances in numerical, theoretical, and experimental techniques relevant to the modeling of these systems
