Abstract

The author explores digitization of archival materials in the context of preservation, including long-term access. Issues relating to hardware and software obsolescence, media degradation, and the need to back up, refresh, migrate, and/or emulate digital files on an ongoing basis are included, along with comments on the costs of perpetual maintenance to digital information. The author seeks to dispel the myth that digitization alone is a preservation activity.
