Description

I will discuss jump conditions across moving discontinuities in strings, sheets, and other thin bodies. Jumps in momentum and energy may be derived from an action principle for an extended body with time-dependent nonmaterial boundaries. Applications include jumping chains, flapping flags, peeling tape, rods impacting surfaces, and maybe even propagating cracks.
