Full abstract:

Partnering with industry has provided students with a real-world laboratory experience. Companies varying from manufacturing to service operations have allowed students access to their operations to work directly with their employees to implement lean process improvements. This presentation will detail the development and results of the hands-on partnership approach that UW Stout practices to instruct use and application of lean tools.

A survey of graduates indicated that lean is the principal operational strategy used by employers hiring UW Stout graduates. Understanding this provided an opportunity for UW Stout courses and programs to tailor the curriculum to best meet employers’ needs. This has provided students with a competitive advantage as they enter the job market; UW Stout has a 97.4% placement rate.

The Lean Enterprise course at UW Stout was developed through partnering with local industry. UW Stout, a Polytechnic University places high value on application. Lean is an action oriented approach to process improvement. Blending the application based approach with the action orientation has provided a unique opportunity for students to apply their classroom learnings to implement lean process improvements with local industry.

Results from these partnerships, how the course was developed and how it is delivered will be detailed
