Abstract

My artifact will focus on space shuttle disasters, including the two main United States disasters, including the Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster (2003) and the Challenger Disaster (1986). The events of these infamous days live on in the minds of citizens who became aware that these disasters took multiple American lives. In my artifact I will focus on describing these disasters, the public’s response to them, and what the NASA Space Shuttle program did following these disasters to ensure similar problems never arose again. This information ties back into our overall main theme of the importance of the space shuttle program on future space travel and the world. Covey directly experienced the Challenger disaster while working as a Mission Control spacecraft communicator (CAPCOM). He worked on Shuttle Mission 51-L, the final flight of the Challenger, and he spoke the infamous words “Challenger, go at throttle up” minutes before the disaster
