The design of a metacomputing environment
Abstract
Metacomputing is an emerging paradigm based upon the assumption that the bandwidth and the latency of computer networks will improve substantially in the years to come. In this paradigm a diversity of computers with different architectures and operating systems are interconnected by a fast network and their resources can be accessed and shared transparently among groups of users. Bond is a metacomputing environment combining a Web-based interface with a layer of intelligent agents acting upon information and network objects. The information stored in Bond objects is used to support the execution of concurrent programs on computing platforms with different architectures and system software. The Bond system provides uniform and location independent user access, and supports user level resource management and seamless execution of groups of programs. An Application Programmer Interface allows applications developed independently to access system services and be linked to the Web interface.
