A time for every purpose under heaven

Sandi L Brunette-Hill, Purdue University

Abstract

The purpose of this study was threefold: (1) to update and expand our knowledge of clergy and their churches, (2) to offer a new theoretical perspective by which to explain the time allocation decisions of clergy, and (3) to employ a more complete methodology than is used in most studies of clergy. Questionnaire data from 310 clergy from Milwaukee County were utilized. Results indicate that clergy time allocation decisions are based on their preferences for some tasks over others, structural limitations on their available time, and perceived costs and benefits of making specific time allocation choices. Denominational affiliation is the most important predictor of time allocation choices identified.
