Set operations under topological constraints

William Wade Charlesworth, Purdue University

Abstract

A new method is presented for combining geometric models such that topological constraints explicitly assigned by the user are satisfied. The method differs from prior work in geometric modeling in that the constraints express topological relationships, including the relationship of a single element in a model to the whole model, and coupled topological relationships can be simultaneously satisfied. This permits the automatic solution of constraint problems in which topology is an unknown. The method is particularly important for geometric modeling applications in which the user is a program, rather than a human. The research describes, formalizes, and analyzes the method, and demonstrates the method with several examples of geometric construction problems.
