A critique of nationalism
Abstract
Rationalist criticism of nationalism, as exemplified by Juergen Habermas, falls short of capturing the essence of the wide appeal different kinds of nationalism evidently have. Through the example of Yugoslavia and of the manifestations of nationalism there we can see the shortcomings of that kind of analysis. I offer a more humanist and existential analysis of the appeal of nationalism and of the regularity of its manifestations, as well as observations about the alternatives.
