Measurement of inclusive and exclusive decays of anti B mesons into negative D short mesons

Michael John Modesitt, Purdue University

Abstract

This paper describes new measurements from CLEO II of the inclusive $\bar B\to D\sbsp{s}{-}X$ and exclusive $B\sp-\to D\sbsp{s}{(\*)-}D\sp{(\*)o}$ and $\overline{B\sp{o}}\to D\sbsp{s}{(\*)-}D\sp{(\*)+}$ branching fractions. The inclusive branching fraction is found to be$${\cal B}(B\to D\sbsp{s}{-}X) = \left\lbrack(12.11 \pm 0.39 \pm 0.88) \times \left({3.5\pm 0.4\%\over{\cal B}(D\sbsp{s}{-}\to\phi\pi\sp-)}\right)\right\rbrack\%$$where the first error is statistical and the second is the systematic error. The sum of the eight $\bar B\to D\sbsp{s}{(\*)-}\bar D\sp{(\*)}$ branching fractions measured from the exclusive reconstruction of B meson final states is found to be consistent with the results from fits to the inclusive D$\sbsp{s}{-}$ momentum spectrum where the fractions of the two-body widths are fixed to the values predicted using factorization. The D$\sbsp{s}{-}$ decay constant, $f\sb{D\sb{s}}$, is found to be$$f\sb{D\sb{s}} = (277 \pm 12 \pm 22 \pm 22 \pm 41)\ {\rm MeV},$$from the inclusive analysis. The exclusive analysis gives a consistent but statistically weaker value of$$f\sb{D\sb{s}} = (274 \pm 21 \pm 29 \pm 22 \pm 39)\ {\rm MeV}.$$
