Decision-making and resource allocation in religious congregations: Open-systems role-set theory

Jerome Richard Koch, Purdue University

Abstract

This study draws from existing research on voluntary associations, social psychology, and congregational studies to develop a comprehensive theory of decision-making in religious organizations. In this paper, open-systems role-set theory is developed to address the decision-making process which leads to resource allocation for congregational social ministry programs. The model may also be applied to decision-making processes and resource allocation for other congregational programs such as worship, education, witness (evangelism), solidarity (fellowship), and administration (stewardship). Results are reported from a comparative case-study of three congregations.
