Measurement of the b quark and B meson cross-sections in proton-antiproton collisions at 1.8 TeV using fully reconstructed decays

Mark W Bailey, Purdue University

Abstract

This thesis describes the measurement of the b quark and B meson production cross-sections at the Collider Detector at Fermilab, using the exclusive decays $B\sp\pm \to J/\psi K\sp\pm$ and $B\sp0 \to J/\psi K\sp{*0}$. The cross-section for b quarks produced at transverse momentum greater than 7.5 GeV/c is found to be 5.92 $\pm$ 0.78 $\pm$ 1.24 $\mu$b. For B mesons with transverse momentum greater than 6.0 GeV/c, the cross-section is found to be 2.06 $\pm$ 0.27 $\pm$ 0.43 $\mu$b for the $B\sp+$ and 2.22 $\pm$ 0.44 $\pm$ 0.64 $\mu$b for the $B\sp0$. Differential cross-sections are also presented.
