The effects of confidence building strategies on learner motivation and achievement

Abstract

The premise of this study is that external conditions can be constructed to facilitate and increase learner confidence and achievement. The external conditions examined in this study were the confidence building strategies proposed by John Keller in his ARCS model. This study tested the ARCS confidence building strategies with 66 graduate and undergraduate college students using printed, self-instructional materials. The data indicated no significant effects arising from the treatment. It is hypothesized that the confidence building strategies under study did not produce the anticipated results because the length of treatment was too short to have a measurable effect.
