Determination of the relationships between others who had influenced retirement center residents and the conditions involved during the selection process of a retirement center

Carl Albert Boger, Purdue University

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to combine several theoretical models that would explain how retirement center residents made the housing decision to move into a retirement center. Bridge's shared decision making model explained that the residents would allow others to influence them during the selection process of a retirement center. Williams' model examined factors that either would force the residents from their homes or attract them into a retirement center. Kotler's model explained that the selection process of a retirement center has different steps in the process. Boger's research attempts to integrate these models to explore the role of significant others during the selection process of a retirement center. This research was conducted in Indiana with Continuous Care Retirement Centers (CCRCs) which represents 95 percent of the retirement centers within Indiana. There were two research questions examined within this study: (1) who influences the elderly person during the selection process and (2) the conditions that were present. By examining these two areas, it should determine "who" and the "conditions" under which the elderly person allows significant others to influence him or her during the selection process of a retirement center. The research found that there were five different groups that influenced the residents during the selection process: (1) spouse, (2) children, (3) relatives, (4) friends, and (5) representatives of the centers. However, the study found that the residents' doctors and clergies did not influence them during the selection process. The study also found that there were different factors associated with each group during the selection process. By understanding the relationships between the different groups and factors, it is possible to explain how others influenced the residents during the selection process of a retirement center.
