Optimal planning of sewer systems rehabilitation
Abstract
The sewer systems in the country are in a general condition such that the need to rehabilitate many to keep them operable is apparent. In the past, rehabilitation has been done on a crisis based approach. A multiple objective mathematical model for the planning of Combined Sewer Systems Rehabilitation is developed as means to avoid crisis' based programs. The model is applied in a sample case in the City of Indianapolis. The model, MARESS (Multi-Attribute REhabilitation of Sewer Systems), integrates several factors in its formulation. The disruption levels caused by the rehabilitation technologies employed, the overall structural condition affected by the failure impact, the overall hydraulics condition, and the maintenance and claims costs are the objective functions to be optimized. Construction costs are considered as a constraint imposed on the model. The detailed development of the model, and the method followed to solve it are shown.
