A macrosociological re-evaluation of the social mobility/fertility hypothesis

Brady Eugene Hamilton, Purdue University

Abstract

This dissertation tests the social mobility/fertility thesis on a cross national level. After reviewing the research literature, the conventional determinants of demographic transition and those factors involved in Dumont and Bank's social mobility effect are analyzed on a sample of countries (N = 60) for the year 1960. A structural equation modeling and measurement technique (LISREL VII) is utilized to analyze the patterns of causation observed among the variables of the model. The results indicate that no significant, direct relationship exists between level of social mobility and decline in fertility.
