Cultural awareness in the field of Marriage and Family Therapy: A qualitative analysis of multiple perspectives

Martha Gonzalez Marquez, Purdue University

Abstract

The field of Marriage and Family Therapy has been engaged in a movement towards cultural awareness for more than a decade. Little has been done, however, to study the overall process that the field has undergone or in what direction the field is heading. In addition, we know very little about the individual process of becoming culturally aware. With more than a decade of increasing cultural awareness as a foundation, this is a good time to assess the process. Reflecting on what has been done, how it was done, opinions on what still needs to be done, and how increased cultural awareness will occur is needed. This reflection can ultimately lead to dialogue concerning the direction of cultural issues in the field. This study attempts to initiate such a dialogue. Using one another as resources can only lead to creative efforts at increasing cultural awareness. Collaborative work has the potential to expand and enrich individual efforts as well. The purpose of this study was to interview specific individuals about their perspectives concerning the process of cultural awareness in the field of Marriage and Family Therapy, to inquire as to their perspectives concerning the future of cultural awareness in the field, to learn about their personal lived experiences in becoming culturally aware, and to present findings so that others may learn from their experiences and perspectives. A qualitative approach was utilized following a phenomenological framework. Interviews were conducted using a semi-structured interview guide over the telephone and two face-to-face interviews. Findings indicate that the field of Marriage and Family Therapy as a whole has adopted a narrow perspective and must broaden it for further awareness to occur. Self-awareness and critical self-examination were found to be key components in cultural awareness. Learning from the diversity of others also enhances cultural awareness. The process of cultural awareness includes an emotional component. A Framework for Cultural Awareness is presented.
