Planning of linear construction projects using simulation and line of balance

James David Lutz, Purdue University

Abstract

The development of a hybrid planning and analysis methodology, SIMLOB (SIMulation - Line Of Balance), which involves the application of simulation in a line of balance context. The findings from a literature review on current field monitoring and analytical planning techniques are presented. Statistics collection simulation enhancements made to foster the monitoring of stage buffer levels and the generation of the LOB and production curves for multiple process projects are described. Production characteristics of linear construction operations including system type, linearity of production curves, production balance, and the build-up of partially completed production units between processes are investigated. The application of SIMLOB is illustrated with the use of case studies.
