Magneto-optical properties in semiconductors

Nammee Kim, Purdue University

Abstract

This thesis is devoted to a study of the magneto-optical properties of zinc-blende structure semiconductors. In particular we study intraband spin-flip transitions in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum in arbitrary experimental configurations. The spin-resonance amplitude of the conduction electron has been calculated including terms up to fourth order in the wave vector $\vec k$ in the 2 x 2 effective mass Hamiltonian as well as the parity-violating spin-orbit coupling. The enhancement of the spin resonance intensity brought about by the stress-induced spin-orbit coupling is also considered. The calculation of the spin-resonance amplitude is extended to the case of bound electrons in shallow donors of zinc-blende and wurtzite structure semiconductor.
