Critical theory and the sociology of knowledge: A comparative study in the theory of ideology
Abstract
The form of ideology critique developed by the central theorists of the early Frankfurt School (Max Horkheimer, Theodor W. Adorno and Herbert Marcuse) is contrasted with Karl Mannheim's sociology of knowledge. Following reconstructions of the origins of the two perspectives and a review of the Frankfurt School's critique of Mannheim, a systematic comparison is developed around four central issues: (1) totality, (2) consciousness and social existence, (3) ideology and (4) truth. An analysis of the general significance of the contrast and its relevance to more contemporary debates is offered in conclusion.
