A FEMINIST FAMILY THERAPIST BEHAVIOR CHECKLIST

SITA EARLYNE CHANEY, Purdue University

Abstract

The major purpose of this study was to construct an instrument for identifying feminist family therapy skills that might be useful to clinicians, academicians, and researchers. This study also examined the psychometric properties of this instrument. The instrument developed in this study, the Feminist Family Therapist Behavior Checklist, is intended to measure the presence or absence of feminist family therapy techniques delivered by the therapist. To determine the instrument's reliability and validity, 60 family therapists were rated on this Checklist while conducting family therapy. The reliability of the instrument was determined by conducting test-retest procedures, assessing the degree of interrater reliability, and by estimating the instrument's internal consistency. The instrument's validity was assessed via criterion-related, content and construct procedures, which included hypotheses testing. The FFTBC may be appropriate for use by clinicians who wish to integrate feminist techniques into their practice, by supervisors who wish to train students in the use of these techniques and measure their implementation, and by researchers who wish to test the efficacy of the feminist therapy model.
