X-RAY SCATTERING FROM FORBIDDEN REFLECTIONS IN VANADIUM-SILICIDE

MELVIN CARL SCHMIDT, Purdue University

Abstract

The anisotropy and anharmonicity of thermal reflections in V(,3)Si have been monitored through x-ray forbidden reflections between 5K and 500K. A transforming sample shows a large peak of anharmonic intensity around T(,M), the martensitic transformation temperature. The phases of these forbidden reflections have been determined by the method of Virtual Bragg Scattering. This is the first application of this method to previously undetermined reflections in a mosaic crystal.
