PLANNED CAREER CHANGE OF TEACHERS: A MULTIVARIATE MODEL (ATTRITION, TURNOVER)

Abstract

Research on employee turnover and intent to change occupations has been a major focus of study in the social sciences. Until recently, very little of this research has been multivariate, career specific, and of occupations requiring prolonged training. Since the teaching profession has been experiencing significant numbers of teachers making career changes and an even larger number planning to make career changes, it provides a special opportunity to enhance our understanding of turnover among professionals. A multivariate model of five major variable clusters which include: (1) career satisfaction, (2) demographics, (3) satisfaction with job requirements, (4) satisfaction with job rewards, and (5) perceived alternative demands, is used to predict planned career change of teachers. A multiple regression analysis is performed on data collected from 551 mathematics teachers. Career satisfaction, demographics, satisfaction with job requirements, and satisfaction with job rewards are all found to contribute to the prediction of planned career change of teachers. Perceived alternative demands for a teacher's skills was not found to contribute to the prediction power of the model.
