FAMILY CONFIGURATION, FAMILY INTERACTION, AND INTELLECTUAL ATTAINMENT (CONFLUENCE MODEL, STATUS, BIRTH ORDER, FAMILY SIZE)

PRUDENCE A WIDLAK, Purdue University

Abstract

The present study used confluence model scores (Zajonc, Markus, and Markus, 1979) computed for individual respondents of the Youth In Transition study (Bachman, 1970) to examine the relation between family configuration and family interaction and the contribution of both to mental development. Although the confluence model score predicted verbal ability, as measured by Quicktest score, moderately well (r = .33), the family interaction variables employed in the present study mediated only 5% of this association. Parental encouragement was the most significant component of family interaction.
