RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PLASMA CORTISOL, DEXAMETHASONE SUPPRESSED CORTISOL, PHYSICAL FITNESS AND EMOTIONALITY IN ADULT MALES

WOJTEK JAN CHODZKO-ZAJKO, Purdue University

Abstract

Thirty three adult males were tested to determine the nature and extent of relationships between plasma cortisol, dexamethasone suppressed cortisol, physical fitness and emotionality. Three major conclusions were drawn. Firstly, both the dexamethasone suppression test and plasma cortisol were shown to be reliable biochemical predictors of emotionality in asymptomatic individuals. However, in normal subjects plasma cortisol was found to be more powerful than the DST for detecting relationships between biochemical variables and emotionality. Secondly, physical fitness was shown to be largely independent of both psychometric and biochemical measures of emotionality. Finally, emotionality was shown to be a multidimensional phenomenon consisting of both psychological and biochemical dimensions.
