STOCHASTIC LIFETIMES: A GENERAL MODEL (RELIABILITY, FAILURE TIME, HAZARD FUNCTION)

LAWRENCE MARK LEEMIS, Purdue University

Abstract

There is an increased emphasis in industry to produce components and systems of high reliability. As a result of this emphasis, more models describing the random time to failure of an item are appearing in the literature. The recent literature concerning modeling lifetimes with probability distributions is fragmented. Many of the elements of the modeling problem (e.g., system structure, risks, etc.) have been studied, but a general model that incorporates all of these elements has not yet been proposed. The purpose of this research is to present such a general lifetime model and illustrate its usefulness.
