THE RETRIEVAL EXPERT MODEL OF INFORMATION RETRIEVAL

SCOTT CRAIG DEERWESTER, Purdue University

Abstract

The purpose of an information retrieval system is to meet information needs. People who are expert at meeting information needs go about satisfying them much differently and, in general, more successfully than automated systems. The model that forms the basis for this dissertation is a descriptive model of how these experts satisfy information needs. This model can be used prescriptively in the design of an information retrieval system whose performance is similar to that of a human expert.
