TOWARD AN INTEGRATIVE MODEL OF CHANGE IN FAMILY THERAPY

ANTHONY WAYNE HEATH, Purdue University

Abstract

The models of change within family therapy have not been articulated or developed. The purposes of this study were: (1) To examine and critically review the literature relevant to family change in family therapy, organizational development, and cybernetics. (2) To integrate the literature from the three areas into a coherent model of family change. (3) To examine the model's implications for family therapy practice, research, and theory. The literature demonstrated overlaps in nine areas of the change process. They were (1) levels, (2) pattern disruption, (3) cognitive shifts, (4) variety, (5) boundaries, (6) goals/desired states, (7) relationships, (8) distress, and (9) ratification. These areas were used to develop the Family Change Model (FCM). Implications for use in guiding therapists' work and developing a theory of change were suggested, as were appropriate ways to assess the model's usefulness in the therapy context.
