APPLICATION OF INTERACTIVE COMPUTER GRAPHICS IN FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS

KHOSROW NEMATOLLAAHI, Purdue University

Abstract

A Unified Data Base System (UDB) for generation of finite element models, analysis of generated models, display of the generated models, and display of deformed shape of the models is presented in this dissertation. The UDB System can be divided into three distinct parts as follows: The first part of the system, which is also called the pre-processor, will generate the finite element model and it will also generate the loads and boundary conditions of the model. The model generated by the pre-processor may be displayed on graphic display devices, such as Tektronix or Ramtek using the GIFTS or MOVIE.BYU graphics Systems. GIFTS is a Graphic Oriented Finite Element Time Sharing System which has been developed at The University of Arizona. MOVIE.BYU is a graphic display program for finite element data which has been developed at The University of Utah. The second part of the (UDB) system consists of the analysis programs. The GIFTS analysis package may be used for analysis of the generated model based on the finite element analysis technique. The structural analysis program SAP IV may also be used as the analysis tool. SAP IV was developed at the University of California, Berkeley. The third part is the result display programs. The GIFTS result display program, RESULT, may be used for display of the deformed shapes of the models, graphical presentation of principal stresses, character presentation of failure criterion, and also graphical presentation of stress contours. In Appendix A, there are four example problems and the listing of the interactive commands to show the step-by-step functionality of the system. All the computation and plots in this study were carried out on the Purdue University Cyber Computer System at the Computer Aided Design and Graphics Laboratory (CADLAB).
