OPTIMIZATION OF REAL-TIME OPERATIONS OF RESERVOIR SYSTEMS AND IMPLEMENTATION PROBLEMS OF OPTIMIZATION TECHNIQUES (KENTUCKY)
Abstract
This study deals with the optimization of real-time operations of reservoir systems and the associated implementation problems of these optimization models. A new method for determining optimal real-time operations of reservoir systems using pre-emptive goal programming is proposed and applied to a four reservoir system in Kentucky. Three methods are presented to handle the nonlinearity due to the maximization of hydropower. All three methods are approximations to a nonlinear optimization problem. The existence of some of the implementation problems of real-time reservoir operations models is demonstrated by examples. The problems that are studied are the effects of using approximate reach routing models, imperfect streamflow forecasts and incorrect objective functions in real-time operations of reservoir systems.
