COMPUTER SIMULATED ANALYSIS OF CVTS EMPLOYING ELASTOHYDRODYNAMIC LUBRICATION

YOUNES KHALIL YOUNES, Purdue University

Abstract

The comparative analysis for eleven designs of stepless frictional drives is carried out. The kinematical criteria used in this comparison are the Drill-Roll ratio and the Drill-Input speed ratio. These criteria are investigated over the pertinent range of transmission ratios for each drive. A complete computer simulated analysis is developed for the KOPP type frictional drive. This drive is selected for its wide range of drill velocity component. The analysis covers the working range of the unit in terms of transmission ratios, input rotational speeds and torques. Elastohydrodynamic lubrication is considered in the calculations of the frictional forces transmitted through the contact areas. An experimental investigation is carried out for the above mentioned drive. The reliability of the proposed system of analysis is asserted by comparing the results on the actual transmission. A theoretical analysis for the BEIER type frictional drive is carried out for the purpose of studying the effect of different parameters on the efficiency of transmission. This drive is selected for its high torque capacity per unit volume and its potential for high efficiency of transmission.
