STUDY OF SINGLE-PION PRODUCTION BY THE WEAK CHARGED-CURRENT

GREGORY MICHAEL RADECKY, Purdue University

Abstract

This study gives the results of single-pion production by the weak charge-current utilizing the wide-band muon-type neutrino beam of the Argonne ZGS. The data were obtained from hydrogen and deuterium targets using the Argonne 12-foot bubble chamber. A brief overview of the experimental apparatus and the data processing is given. The details of the methods of event selection and separation from background are given as are the details of the corrections and systematics of the data sample. The energy-dependent cross sections and differential distributions are presented for the single-pion reactions (nu)p (--->) (mu)('-)p(pi)('+), (nu)n (--->) (mu)('-)p(pi)('0), and (nu)n (--->) (mu)('-)n(pi)('+). Using these data a study of the isospin properties of the nucleon-pion system as well as a comparison with theoretical models are made. Using the data of the reaction (nu)p (--->) (mu)('-)p(pi)('+), the characteristic mass of the nucleon axial-vector elastic form factor is determined within the context of the Adler model. The same data are used to investigate the possible departure of the nucleon axial-vector elastic form factor from its usual dipole form.
