COMMUNITY SERVICES AND SOCIAL NEEDS: A CLOSER LOOK AT A HUMAN SERVICE DELIVERY SYSTEM

KAREN JEAN FARESTAD, Purdue University

Abstract

An investigation of the evolution and development of the concept of the United Way, which derived from the philanthropic tradition in America, is the focus of this research project. A theoretical perspective, relating socially derived needs and demands for human services, is developed utilizing social exchange theory and developing a social resource model which predicts the use of human services. A random sample of the population of a medium sized Indiana city is the basis for the analysis contained in this paper and perceptions about and use of community based and United Way funded organizations are investigated. Finally, the prospect of social change, initiated by the service delivery sector, is explored.
