STUDIES IN DATA BASE MANAGEMENT

MICHAEL DAVID GAGLE, Purdue University

Abstract

Data base managment systesm have become well-accepted tools for many data processing tasks. Since their commercial introduction in 1968, such systems have become available to an increasing number of organizations. Recent developments in computer hardware, especially with Very Large Scale Integrated circuitry and Winchester disk drive technology, will continue this trend so that even small business will be able to afford full network data base systems of the internal information processing needs. Design consideration for a small business data base management system and ancillary software for such systems are discussed. Procedures for increasing the power and utility of the Data Base Management System through incorporation of world knowledge and through a high level interface are also presented.
