THE NEW JOURNALISM AS NARRATIVE ART.

GERALD ROBERT LAREAU, Purdue University

Abstract

In the last few years there have been many attempts to define the New Journalism. It has been described as journalism revolting against convention, the New Realism continuing the tradition of the novel, an empirical offshoot of the disintegrating novel form, a type of non-interpretive art. The lack of clarity and consensus in defining the New Journalism is due in part to the variety of the form itself. Each New Journalist has his own specific purpose and epistemological stance, and he constructs techniques appropriate to attaining that purpose and reflecting that stance. Consequently, it is difficult to generalize on the New Journalism as a unified genre.
