THE RECEIPT OF INTELLECTUAL AID: SOCIAL COMPARABILITY OF A TUTOR AS A SOURCE OF THREAT TO THE TUTEE.
Abstract
In a 3 (tutor status) X 2(tutor evaluative power) X 2(subject self esteem) experimental design, the effects of recipient reactions to tutoring were investigated. The study had a threefold purpose: (1) To expand the body of literature concerning recipient reactions to types of aid situations; (2) to expand current knowledge regarding the relationship of social comparison theory to recipient reactions to aid; (3) to provide initial information regarding tutor status and evaluative power as they might influence student reactions to the personalized instruction setting.
