Design of a Linear Vibrating System to Measure Low-frequency Random Excitation

Abstract

When a vehicle travels over a highway, irregularities in the highway profile will cause vibratory motion in the sprung and unsprung masses of the vehicle. The roughness of the pavement, therefore, influences greatly the amplitude of these vibrations. Thus, in order to predict vehicle behavior a description of the highway is needed.One statistical method of characterizing the highway surface is that of a power spectral density analysis of the roughness of the highway. Such a power spectrum describes a particular highway section in terms of the power associated with different bands of wavelengths present in the highway.The primary objective of this investigation was to develop a design procedure for constructing a suitable measur- ing system that would directly measure pavement roughness power spectra. This measuring system must be able to accurately describe, by means of a power spectrum very rough roads as well as very smooth ones over a broad range of wavelengths.
