Abstract

The m o lecu lar s t r u c t u r e s c f methyl azid e and p i v a l o n i t r i l e (oc ,oC - dim eth y lp ro p io n itrile) have teen studied by the se c to rmiorcphotometer method. In methyl aside the parameters are found to be: C-N = l . i j ? f 0 . 0 2 A, N ^ N g = 1.2l> +_ 0 , 0 1 1 , Na -Ns = 1 .1 2 _+ 0.C 1 1 a n d / CNN = 120 _+ 2 C. P i v a l o n i t r i l e has a c e n tr a l C-0 d i s t a n c e of l.lioO +■_ 0 , 0 2 0 A which may b e a s c r i b e d a t l e a s t p a r t l y t o h y p e r - c o n j u g a t i o n . The o t h e r p a ra m ete rs a r e : C-C = l.p^-C + 0 . 0 1 0 1 , C-N = 1.160 + 0.007 A and /_C-C-CK = 1 0 9 .5 + 1.5°.
