Industrial control systems (ICS) & supervisory control & data acquisition (SCADA) cybersecurity of power grid systems: Simulation / modeling / cyber defense using open source and virtualization

Cory-Khoi Quang Nguyen, Purdue University

Abstract

This dissertation study introduces the establishment of an Econometric for Cyber Defense through the use of simulation modeling using Anylogic. The simulation model measures the economic impact of a cyber attack on the distribution layer of an individual feed of the power grid. The economic impact varies based on the level of security implemented throughout the infrastructure on smartgrid devices. The dissertation presents a virtualized training environment for defenders to better develop their skills using open-source solutions and tactics to protect both Corporate and Cyber-Physical network systems. Raspberry Pi are introduced in this dissertation with modified circuits to represent cyber-physical devices running commonly used protocols: Modbus, DNP3, & BACnet.
