Essays on industrial organization
Abstract
This dissertation contains three essays relating to a broad investigation on the patterns of firm competition, industrial allocation and productivity growth. The first chapter investigates a long-standing research question in industrial organization, that is, whether competition improves firm productivity and if so, through what mechanism? The empirical results provide compelling evidence on how competition affects firm productivity. Using micro-level data, I evaluate the effects of capital misallocation on firm market power in the second chapter. The third chapter investigates the empirical relationship between firm ownership and market performance.
