Strange forces: Mysticism in the works of Leopoldo Lugones

Benjamin G Ortiz, Purdue University

Abstract

This paper examines the mystical experiences present in selected works of Leopoldo Lugones. Incorporating approaches from religious scholars, neuroscientists, and literary critics I will show that Lugones uses the mystical experience in a variety of ways, to create thought provoking works of literature. Through an analysis of short stories as well as poems, I examine the ways in which Lugones changes the context of the mystical experience to convey different ideas about the world and our relationship to it. The product of Lugones' use of the mystical experience can be seen in the way the characters interact with each other and the world which surrounds them, expanding the ways in which meaning is conveyed.
