Persistence among female musicians using the social cognitive career theory

Dawn M Graham, Purdue University

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of persistence among female musicians. The study was based on the Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT). This qualitative, exploratory study involved eight semi-structured interviews using a phenomenological framework. Female musicians were recruited using a referral approach in order to gain access to interviewees via e-mail and telephone. Four main themes emerged from the data during analysis: social support, overcoming hardship, identity and education. Many of the subcategories within each theme supported previous literature related the Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT). The findings of this study have multiple implications for both career research and clinical practice.
