Descent and the generic packet conjecture
Abstract
Combining a conjectural formulation of the outcome of twisted endoscopy and the process of descent, we arrive at a relation between the local character expansions for irreducible admissible representations belonging to an “ L-packet” at a finite set of semisimple k -rational points of a group, and the local (&thetas;, ω)-twisted character expansion of another group (for which the first mentioned group forms part of a twisted endoscopic datum) at a fixed semisimple point. We develop the requisite (&thetas;, ω)-twisted character expansion for this purpose and also generalize a result of Moeglin and Waldspurger, applying which to our aforementioned relation between character expansions, we obtain (modulo twisted endoscopy) the Generic Packet Conjecture for classical and GSpin groups.
