Gamma-convergence of the Lawrence -Doniach energy to a three-dimensional anisotropic Ginzburg -Landau energy

Chunyan Yuan, Purdue University

Abstract

We consider the Lawrence-Doniach energy functional for layered superconductors and a three-dimensional anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau energy functional. Both models have been used to describe high-temperature superconductors. We prove that as the interlayer spacing in the Lawrence-Doniach model approaches zero, the Lawrence-Doniach energy (with an appropriate Josephson constant) Γ-converges to a three-dimensional anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau energy. This result extends a theorem on convergence of minimizers by Chapman, Du, and Gunzburger.^
