Defining the institutional contexts of ESL: Where does ESL belong

Elizabeth Brooks Patton, Purdue University

Abstract

The research questions posed in this dissertation came out of an exploration of my personal questions about where I might find a job (the institutional contexts of ESL), the impact of legislation on teacher training programs (the top-down federal mandates I had become interested in), how I might find my place in teaching at the university (the relationship between teaching and research), and, if it might be possible to build bridges between my university colleagues and my partners in the K-12 ESL classrooms (the relationship between ESL teachers and researchers).
