The Indiana state -mandated accountability system examined with respect to the relationship between ethnicity and student achievement

Kim R Pryzbylski, Purdue University

Abstract

Student achievement is influenced by factors which have not been taken into consideration in the Indiana school accountability law, Public Law 221. Schools are held accountable based on their language arts and mathematics ISTEP+ scores, attendance rates, and high school graduation rates. However, the ethnicity of a student is not taken into account when student achievement is measured. This study will look at how the ethnicity of students impact the index of performance score for schools. It also examines the School Improvement Plans to determine if schools are addressing the ethnicity of the students in their schools.
