Identity statuses as moderators of the relations of self -efficacy and outcome expectations to goal formation

Brian Francis Heatherton, Purdue University

Abstract

Within the Lent, Brown and Hackett's (1994) social cognitive career theory framework, the moderating effects of identity achievement and moratorium on the relations of self-efficacy and outcome expectation to goal development were investigated. Statistically significant positive correlations were discovered among the self-efficacy, outcome expectation, identity achievement, and moratorium and goal formation variables. Identity achievement was not found to moderate the relations of self-efficacy and outcome expectation to goal development. However, regression analyses revealed that moratorium does moderate the relation of self-efficacy and outcome expectation to goal development.
