The relationship between moral obligations and unified consciousness: Implications for the individual
Abstract
There has been posited the belief that there is an important and necessary link between unified consciousness and moral obligation for the betterment of oppressed groups within a society. The purpose of this project is to look into the nature of this proposed link and determine what implications it has for the individual within the context of a sustained program of liberation. I will pursue this purpose by looking at selected works of three African-American intellectuals and philosophers. The three authors I have chosen are David Walker, W. E. B. DuBois, and Alain Leroy Locke. I will be examining particularly the role played by the concept of a unified racial consciousness and whether the accounts of the authors are defensible.
