Georg Christoph Lichtenberg: A critical bibliography of research and criticism, 1948–1996

Jean M Sanke, Purdue University

Abstract

This work offers the first critical bibliography of research and criticism relating to Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742–1799) since Rudolf Jung's Lichtenberg-Bibliographie of 1972. A new bibliography has long been a desideraturn of Lichtenberg research, not only in light of the profound paradigmatic shifts in critical theory over the last 30 years, but also (and especially) due to the need to take into account the wealth of new editions (e.g., Promies' Schriften und Briefe) and scholarship published on the occasion of Lichtenberg's 250th birthday in 1992. It builds upon existing bibliographical efforts, not only by consolidating their contents into a single volume, but also by arranging the data in such a way that both novices and experts can easily access needed materials. The present bibliography incorporates all of Jung's entries from 1948 onward, in addition to citations drawn from conventional print sources (e.g., Germanistik) as well as from the journal of the Lichtenberg-Gesellschaft e.V., Photorin, and its successor, Lichtenberg-Jahrbuch. Electronic bibliographic sources are also included, most notably the rarely consulted but very important French database FRANCIS, published by the Institut de l'Information Scientifique et Technique in Vandœuvre. Though many studies cover more than one topic of research, they have customarily been listed only according to one primary topic, thus neglecting all other possible uses. The organization of this bibliography consists of two major sections; the first section introduces each area of Lichtenberg scholarship and is followed by a listing of applicable references which are then cited fully in the second section, the bibliography itself. The flexibility of this organization has effectively eliminated the need for indexing beyond the table of contents while still providing cross-referencing across areas of investigation.
