Watch out for lions

Rebecca McKanna, Purdue University

Abstract

A short story collection addressing themes of power, gender, and alienation. The characters are women trying to be strong and self-reliant in a world that has done nothing to facilitate their self-reliance. They are damaged by their own mistakes and alienated from the people around them. However, they are often unsure how to rectify this alienation, because they are trapped in Midwestern politeness and unwilling to ask for help. The Midwest landscape serves as a backdrop to their loneliness and loss of community.^
